Entertainment Weekly debuted today the first picture of the armors of the new Power Rangers, which you will see on the big screen in the upcoming 2017 reboot. So far I can’t say I’m a fan, but on the other hand it could have been a lot worse.
Obviously they weren’t gonna have them wear spandex like in the original TV show (some superheros can get away with that, Power Rangers can’t anymore), so switching to armor was a no-brainer. Really not a fan of the bug-like aesthetic, but apparently that’s by design. Director Dean Israelite (Project Almanac) had this to say: “The show was about kids coming of age, about metamorphosis“, and “These suits needed to feel like they were catalyzed by these kids and their energy, their spirit.” Also this sounds pretty cool “Ours is an alien costume that grows on them, that’s not man-made.”, from production Designer Andrew Menzies.
Again, I completely understand where they’re coming from, you want an updated look that can appeal to a wider, more mature audience, like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles did two years ago. For my taste, on a scale from 1 to 10, where 1 is Dragon Ball and 10 is Deadpool, the new suits for the Powers Rangers movie are somewhere between a 5 and a 6.
Villain Rita Repulsa, who will be played by Elizabeth Banks, was revealed in all her very green glory almost a month ago.
Power Rangers is currently filming in Vancouver, Canada, and will open in theaters on March 24th 2017.
