First it was two, then three and now four. Honestly, I’m all for planning ahead, don’t get me wrong, but shouldn’t James Cameron at the very least deliver one Avatar sequel before he starts throwing down announcements for ten more? Maybe I’m asking for too much here, but I’d like to see at least one of those movies sometime this decade. So many delays and I understand that’s how Cameron works (and when you have the two top grossing movies in the world, no studio is gonna rush you), but this is getting ridiculous. James Cameron has yet to even start filming Avatar 2, so of course they were never going to meet the December 2017 release they were aiming for, which is why Star Wars: Episode VIII took that slot.
But enough ranting, Avatar 2 is now looking at a December 2018 date, which they absolutely have to meet (nine frigging years after the original). Then we’ll be getting Avatar 3, 4 and 5 in December 2020, 2022 and 2023. They’re still planning to film all of them back-to-back, that hasn’t changed despite the two year breaks between some of those dates. I mean it’s clear they’re playing it smart with the release plan, avoiding Star Wars: Episode IX (now a likely December 2019 instead of the current May 24th) and a very possible Episode X (December 2021).
I’m still interested in seeing James Cameron expand this world of his, but I don’t know how much longer I will still be, and I’m probably not the only one.
