This second Star Trek Beyond trailer seems to be a lot more in line with the previous two, and it’s pretty good, but I still feel like I should be a lot more excited for a new Star Trek than I am currently.
“After stopping off at Starbase Earhart, a remote outpost on the fringes of Federation space, the USS Enterprise, halfway into their five-year mission, is destroyed by a powerful, unstoppable wave of unknown aliens. With the crew stranded on a unknown planet and with no apparent means of rescue, they find themselves in conflict with a new ruthless enemy who has a well-earned hatred of the Federation and what it stands for.”
How is it that Kirk still somehow ends up getting a new ship, despite destroying one almost every mission? That’s a question for the ages. Anyway, like I said in the intro, this new trailer is definitely more Star Trek (new Trek), and the villain seems to look a lot better than he did in the first preview, but at the same time it lacks a sense of awe. This is frigging Star Trek, I should be in awe, and there’s none of that on display here. They keep talking about the vastness of space yet it feels like we never get to actually explore that space.
Justin Lin directed Star Trek Beyond, while Simon Pegg, Doug Jung, Roberto Orci, John D. Payne and Patrick McKay wrote it. Starring in the new sci-fi adventure are Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Idris Elba, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service), Anton Yelchin, John Cho and more.
Star Trek Beyond opens July 22nd in the US and around the world.
