Oscar winner Brie Larson is Marvel Studios’ front-runner to play Captain Marvel in their upcoming movie of the same name, that’s according to Deadline.
The young actress won her first Oscar only a few months ago for Room, and since then she finished principle photography on Kong: Skull Island with Tom Hiddelston. In Captain Marvel Brie Larson would play Carol Danvers, a human woman who receives super powers after an encounter with the Kree (an alien race in the MCU). She then assumes the identity of Captain Marvel. This will be the studio’s very first female-centric standalone installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Meg LeFauve (Inside Out) are penning the script while Marvel are still looking for a director. Right now the movie is scheduled to open on March 8th 2019, which is still a ways off, so they have plenty of time to find a suitable director. If I was in charge, I’d look into Kathryn Bigalow (The Hurt Locker). Or maybe there’s someone even better out there.
I’m really not familiar with Captain Marvel, although she seems to be a fan favorite and some might even call her “Marvel’s biggest female hero”. Speaking of female heroes, Marvel are also finally planning to do a standalone Black Widow movie. It’s all very early and they don’t have a date for that yet.
