A Slave Versus An Empire in the Debut Trailer for Ben-Hur

When you set out to remake a classic like the original Ben-Hur, a movie that won 11 Oscars in 1960, you definitely have your work cut out. There’s really not a lot of wiggle room here and based on this first trailer I think they left a few too many loose screws.

And it’s not like this looks cheap, quite the contrary, so sadly I can already smell an incoming box office flop. Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted) directed Ben-Hur, with a screenplay by Keith R. Clarke and John Ridley, based on the novel of the same name by Lew Wallace. Starring in it are Jack Huston (really not feeling his Ben-Hur), Toby Kebbell, Morgan Freeman and Rodrigo Santoro.

Ben-Hur opens August 12th in the US, 57 years, 3 months and 6 days after the original’s premiere.
