When you travel as much as I have, you get to discover that even things like Hollywood have a worldly counterpart, and Nollywood is definitely the African answer to the demand for diverse stories that tell a unique perspective. It’s why I became such a big fan of it on my travels.
With extremely talented people and excellent films all around, its method of storytelling is one to fall in love with. Its leading men and women are at the very center of the industry. Between multitalented business people and film industry ingenues, learning more about events behind the scenes is just one “follow” button away. So what are you waiting for? Get out your smartphones and take a look!
Richard Mofe-Damijo // @RMofeDamijo
Talk about a triple threat! Richard Mofe-Damijo isn’t just an actor, he’s also a lawyer, PR consultant, writer and life coach. With this in mind, you know his Twitter is going to be full of the kind of motivation (and constant reminders) to get you through the day. Simple messages like “There is talent, there is hard work and there is grace. Choose grace.” and “The discipline to graciously handle fame is more important than the struggle to gain fame” signal he’s one of the good guys wanting to make a strong impression on the world. That’s definitely the kind of person I can get behind!
Mercy Aigbe // @realmercyaigbe
Mercy’s acting and directorial exploits have made her a staple in Nollywood, known best for her films “Okanjua” (2008), “Igberaga” (2009) and “Ihamo” (2009), but she’s also a commercial success and one of the most celebrated beauties in the country. Check out her daily picture inspirations or her more inspiring quotes like this one: “Every great accomplishment starts with the decision to try.” Talk about excellent words of advice!
Damilola Adegbite // @adedamee
Soap opera superstar, model and television personality Damilola Adegbite is a huge celebrity, and it’s easy to see why. A big proponent of all things Nigerian (she frequently posts about upcoming events like Nigerian Fashion Week and hot new shows to watch), she’s a great one to follow to know what’s on the up and up. She also recently married fellow actor Chris Attoh, so if you’re into the celebrity dynasties, she’s throwing her name into the ring. Her newborn is definitely the cutest part!
Mike Ezuruonye // @realmikeezu
Born in Nigeria, 33-year-old Mike is best known for his Best Actor and Best Supporting actor nominations. He has a number of great titles attributed to his name like “Broken Marriage,” “Beyond Reason,” “Critical Decision,” “Unforeseen (2005),” “Occultic Kingdom” and “Desire” (2008). To add to the acclaim, his Twitter feed is full of laughs, praise for his beloved country (lots about the beautiful Nairobi) and gratitude. If you’re into the kind of guy who uploads lots of behind the scenes information and praises the Kenya Wildlife Service every so often, then Mike is your man!
Yvonne Nelson // @yvonnenelsongh
This Ghanaian actress was a past Miss Ghana contestant and is a celebrated actress with more than 28 films to her name. Yet she’s more than just a well-rounded celebrity (she’s also a producer, model, and entrepreneur). She’s also got an amazing Twitter account. Sign on for up and coming works in progress to inspirational shout outs. Sometimes you just need something to drive you forward, and Yvonne hasn’t disappointed me! With a new show soon to air (“Heels & Sneakers”), her star’s just going to continue to rise.
While I definitely suggest you check out any of the great Nollywood titles mentioned above (BuzzNigeria has the lowdown on what to watch and with a VPN you’ll get around any geoblocking that you might run into), it’s also plain to see that following these great actors is a wonderful way to get inspired each day and keep track of your new favorite stars!
